The Power of God's Plan
Tameka Jackson was born in (North Philly) a.k.a. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in May of 1981. She was raised by her mother and is the oldest of five - three brothers and one sister. She grew up in a medium-sized Pentecostal church up until the age of twelve. That was an interesting age because she got saved (to a certain point she understood what being saved really meant), baptized, received the gift of the Holy Spirit, moved to another neighborhood, and then left the church. That was when her life began to change. Although, she moved just around the corner, that one corner made a huge difference in what she and her siblings encountered. Being sheltered, a tom-boy and raised in the church led to her being very naive to the real world. She went from wearing skirts everyday, playing tackle football, talking about the wild girls, walking past the drug dealers to wearing jeans, jumping double-dutch, becoming a wild girl, and dating the drug dealers.
In high school, she tried vigorously to occupy her time. From the outside looking in, she was the sweetest thing you could have ever known. She held a job, was a star player on the basketball team, played volleyball, ran track, managed to get honors in her junior and senior year, and was accepted to seven colleges--including one for basketball—but, no one knew of her “Miss Hyde side”. From the age of 12-19, she ran from God. Her primary goal was to quiet that voice within her that said she was not doing right. That same voice convicted her every time, and eventually became lower and lower as she got farther and farther away from God. The funny thing was that she did not think she was that bad. She saw herself as not being as bad as others; but she was worse, because she was fooling herself.
“One day I snuck out of the house and my mother caught me for the first time. I came home and I saw a wet spot next to my bed. So, I felt my bed and saw it was wet, I then slept on the floor. I figured my brothers must be blackmailing me and letting me know that they knew I snuck out. Well, when I finally saw my mom, she asked me did I sleep in my bed. I said no, it was wet…then I asked her why she wet it. She said, because you make your bed and you lie in it. I thought it was interesting, not only that the things I was doing was making my bed, but that I saw the water before I got in the bed, so I knew I was making a mess of my bed, but instead of sleeping in my bed, I slept on the hard floor. I was willing to settle for less.”
That was a pivotal moment in her life. She went off to college an hour and a half away from home. Where, once again she thought she was running away from God, her upbringing, home training and her other life, but it all caught up with her, but God grabbed her before anything else could.
In August of 2003, Tameka entered into her last semester in a domestic abroad program at American University in Washington, D.C. There God met her in another way…He begin to show her his mighty power. Upon completion of that program and her degree in Computer Information Systems, she moved to the Washington/Maryland area where God turned her life inside out.
